17" Sony CRT monitor smoking...

Hi everybody,

some days ago, I turned my 17" Sony monitor (CPD-200GST). Some seconds after
turning it on, I heard a "click", then after another minute or so (with the
picture still perfectly visible), smoke come out of the monitor on both
sides. I immediately removed the power cord and did nothing more.

I would like to know if anybody came across the same problem, or has any
idea of what could be happened. The repair centre will charge me for
verifying what is needed for repair and I wouldn't like to waste money just
to discover I have to throw the monitor away... I am also quite concerned
about the fault (risk of fire), so I was wondering if it were the case to
buy a new monitor anyway. The monitor was 6 years old.

Thanks

I've seen it once.. somehow the pins from the power socket had worked loose
and started arcing.. it was burning the circuit board with the arcing, hence
the smoking. I ran a small length of electrical wire from the pin to the
closest solder pad (as the arcing burnt a small hole around the pin).

i have seen a few posts on usenet about monitors burning or smoking...
and though it's rare...it's a good idea to turn your monitor off when not at
home.
since new monitors ...especially crt's are inexpensive...it would make no
sense
to try and repair a 6 year old monitor...just recycle it and get a new one

Had a similar problem on a Zenith 15" monitor and the solider points were
the power connected to the main board had degenerated due to heat and arched
through other circuits on the board. I removed the old solider and
reattached the contact points. The monitor work well for another year and
then some of the capacitors on the main board died due to bad voltage
regulator. Could not repair the bad capacitors / voltage regulator because
I had no way of discharging the power from monitor. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WORK
ON A MONITOR unless you can DISCHARGE the main capacitors or it will be you
smoking and not the monitor. I tried once. A shop will charge you $75.00
to $125.00 flat rate to fix the monitor. The question is it worth it? Best
to scrape the Sony and get a new or used monitor. Some places will trade
for your old one. If you scrape the old one be sure to dispose of it
correctly as monitors contain hazardous chemicals (lead, mercury, PCB's).

.... someone said... : electronics runs on smoke; when it comes out of
it, its a BS ...

.... get a new monitor (cheapest IMHO ) ...

6 year old 17" CRT monitor is not worth repairing, replace
it.

Dont play with a device that runs on an internal voltage of 27,000v...

get a new one, or preferably a TFT panel.
