I'm trying to get a game working, but i keep getting this message and the
game wont start: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose
'close' to terminate the application." and theres a close and an ignore
button, both of them do nothing. I get this message on about half the games
i try to play now. the title of the window that pops up is 16-bit Windows
Subsystem. Please someone respond asap and help me. thank you.

What game? If it is an older one, most of the "older" games will run
perfectly well on Windows XP. Some need to use Compatibility Mode (details
are in Help and Support), and this TechNet article will help you:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/lgcyapps.mspx

Basically, what Compatibility Mode does is allow the older program to
"think" it is being installed on the operating system for which it was
designed. You also need to pay attention to the game's requirements, and
some need to be installed using Compatibility starting with the installation
itself by going to StartRun/Browse and locating the install.exe or setup.exe
file on the root of the CD. You can right-click that file, follow the
pattern to use Compatibility Mode and have it install.

After the install, make sure to update the program from the web site of the
creator, then right-click the icon you'll use to launch the game and make
sure the proper Compatibility settings are ready. You also need to make
sure the proper display and color settings are selected.

There's no information from the support people where you downloaded the
game? I don't have either. Perhaps someone else will drop in with some
information, or you could ask on the web site where you obtained the games.

Check that the file AUTOEXEC.NT actually exists.

We had a PC with a virus infection recently that had removed the
AUTOEXEC.NT file from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Nope, perhaps someone else can. If they're older games, they may have
updates you need if they won't install using Compatibility Mode - not just
running them using compatibility.

Hi,

You can solve that problem by replacing the file:

1. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\repair
Right-Click and Copy the file named: autoexec.nt

2. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\System32
Right-Click in that window to Paste the file
(Answer yes if prompted to replace existing file)

about your message steve, I'm not sure how to check that it exists. i went to
search for "all files or folders" and no autoexec.nt showed up, so does that
means it doesnt exist? and if it does, is there a way to fix it? thanks.

Hi juddstinator,

Sounds like that might be a problem installing a DOS game...

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :)
