When I try to setup certain programs this error message pops up:

"An installable virtual device driver failed dll initialization. Choose
'close' to terminate the application"

'close' and 'ignore' boxes are the options

Is there a way to fix this problem?

I am using xp pro sp2

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767&Product=winxp

This can also be caused by malware, so do the normal av and non-viral
scanning. Post back if you need help with that.

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you have WinXP SP2
installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above.

You need to go to C:\WINDOWS\repair and from there copy autoexec.nt &
config.nt to c:\windows\system32\
The programs you are having trouble with will work after you do this.
For what it's worth
