I'm having a problem installing a program on a window xp based computer.
This is an older program but has installed on my other xp computer with no
problem. As soom as I atempt installation this error message appears:

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the
application."
with the options of close or ignore. Niether option will allow me to
continue.

I can understand that the program may be too old to run on xp, but it works
on my other computer just fine. Both computers say there running xp with
servicepack 2, and I verified this with microsoft's web site.

Any ideas would be appretiated
thanks

It's a sign of malware, you can cure the problem but the cause will
still be there.

Delete the autoexec.nt file at that location
Copy the one at c:\WINDOWS\repair to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767&Product=winxp

This can also be caused by malware.

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you have WinXP SP2
installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above.
