Hi

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above.

Could be caused a trojan or something similar, e.g.
TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a, more about this here:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:

This installaton program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP
system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or
corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.

XP_Fix.EXE by TRF Systems, Inc.

It seems quite unneeded to get and download a program when there are
backup copies of the two files autoexec.nt and config.nt in
windows\repair

Thanks for the note, Alex. As this has worked for many others, thought I
would pass it on.)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The Visualtour download (XP_fix.exe) cured my problem, which enabled me to
cure my twain/scanner problems.
My problems occurred after I tried to install XP service pack 2. While
installing SP2, my computer froze. After a restart, all of my drivers had to
be reinstalled. What a hassle! Then I got that 16 bit subsystem problem. You
can see why I was very hesitant on installing SP2. If it ain't broken don't
fix it! But... everyone kept telling me to install SP2. Why did I listen?
Well, now everything seems to be OK, (after reinstalling SP2) and using
XP_fix.exe, thanks to all the people here.

Thanks again,
Joe
