16-bit Error.. HELP!!

C

Carley

Ok, I'm getting this error when I try to install The Sims
on my computer:

16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
-------------------------------
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.

I went to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767
and did everything it told me to and absolutely nothing
worked. I still get the error. Its really frustrating. Any
help would really be appreciated, thanks!

Contact the program vendor.

Although the Sims games are notorious for being very picky about the
order in which they are installed, we've also been seeing a lot of this
error in the newsgroup lately. Start troubleshooting by doing a scan
with a current antivirus (version not earlier than 2003) using updated
definitions. Do the scan in Safe Mode. Continue your housekeeping by
removing other malware. Here are my normal malware removal steps:

Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to
run CWShredder and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm.
Although CWShredder is no longer being updated, it will still clean
older variants of the CoolWebSearch malware. A combination of
HijackThis and About:Buster (http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in
removing homepage hijackers. Please read the instructions carefully.
Make sure you are able to see all hidden files and extensions (View tab
in Folder Options).

Empty your Temporary and Temporary Internet Files while you're at it.
You can do with this Disk Cleanup (Start>Run type "cleanmgr" [Enter]
without the quotes).

See if that makes a difference.

I'm wondering it it's just the same person or group posting.

I don't think so, Rock. There have been posts in the security.virus
group, too, and various posts over the last week or so here in
xp.general. We've also had discussions about this error in outside
mailing lists. As sort of a general rule, when we see a lot of the same
errors suddenly appearing in this newsgroup (and you can see that they
are unrelated to a Service Pack or update), one of the first things to
look at is if there is a new virus or malware moving through the
Windows world. This newsgroup is quite a good "canary in the coalmine"
indicator. I don't mean that to be cold - just that you can actually
track malware movements pretty well with posts in this newsgroup.
