16-bit apps won't open

After almost 2 years, I can no longer open any 16-bit application. NTVDM runs chewing up most of the computers resources, until ended via task manager. It isn't just one bad application - even Sysedit won't run - anything that's 16 bit. I've been advised that the only fix is reinstalling windows but would prefer not to.

I have done the re-install and it is a waste of time. My machine does the same thing. I am unable to find a clue in anything on the Microsoft site or elsewhere concerning this

Good Luck!

Despite doing everthing in the MS guide I mentioned previously and spending 2
hours on the phone with Microsoft support I still have this issue too. NTVDM
uses all CPU and will not load 16 bit apps. Microsoft seem not to care as
this is a major issue- if you surf you'll find many people with the same
issue so it is obviously an XP problem but there is no resolution. Are you
listening Microsoft? No wonder Mac users just laugh when they see forums like
this.

I solved the problem today. It was related to an antivirus program i use
(avast).
Now everything is working fine.
