137 gig limit

If I get a 200 gig hard drive, is the 137 gig limit an issue?

And if I create two 100 gig partitions, is the 137 gig limit still an
issure?

And when does the 137 gig limit ever become and issue?

Running WinXP, P4, SP2, Phoenix Bios Plus.

Thanks in advance

Yep, when its an ATA drive.

Yep, its a problem with the physical drive, not the partition.

When ever you have a drive thats bigger than
137G and its an ATA drive, not SCSI or external.
Running WinXP, P4, SP2,

Thats fine for 48 bit LBA support, what you need for drives over 137G
Phoenix Bios Plus.

That may or may not support drives over 137G.
There should be an updated bios on the motherboard
manufacturer's wet site if it doesnt currently support
drives over 137G. It probably does support them already.

If it is, this does not help, since it is a sector-addressing
issue, i.e. happens well before partitions are processed.

If you have the current second rated OS from Redmont without
SP2.
Running WinXP, P4, SP2, Phoenix Bios Plus.

You should be safe. But don't ever try it without SP2.
No warning, at some time you just loose data. The worst
possible behaviour.

Rod and Arno, much obliged for the info.

Two things limit access/using a 200GB.
Software, Win XP needs service pack 1 to access hard drives larger then
137GBs
As you already are using service pack 2, your software will work fine.

BIOS, it was not until about mid 2003 that bios came with 48-bit addressing
Which is what is need for the bios to recognize a hard drive larger then
137GBs.
If the date on you bios is late 2003 (or later) it should work.

Partiton size is not a issue.

Nope.
48-bit addressing is what you need for the bios to see a hard drive larger then 137GBs, full size.
A pre 48-bit LBA bios should see larger than 137GBs HD fine but only as a 137GB one.
