137 GB barrier on my windows OS

xynetech

Just bought a 160 GB WESTERN DIGITAL hard drive and
formatted it using the tools in WINXP. The only problem is
that it only detected 128 GB of space.

I downloaded WESTERN DIGITAL DATA LIFEGUARD to format the
drive but on one of its step(s), it showed a warning that
my current WINXP doesn't support a 160 GB hard drive
capacity.

Can anyone help?

As Kenny S. has said - you need SP-1 installed. And you need one more
thing:

If your motherboard BIOS is not 48bit LBA capable, you will either
need to update the BIOS (flash) or purchase an add in card with on
board BIOS. You can purchase a board from www.promise.com.

Hi,

As mentioned, you need SP1 *unless* your BIOS supports 48 bit LBA. To see if
yours can, check with the motherboard manufacturer for a BIOS upgrade.

To go beyond 128GB (binary base - 137 GB decimal) you need '48 bit LBA'
so it can address enough individual sectors on the drive. That needs on
the one hand XP with SP1 installed; and on the other a motherboard
controller and BIOS that supports 48 bit LBA. So check with the specs
of your motherboard, and its maker's web site; there may be a BIOS
update needed, and that you have SP1
