I'am getting a 9800 Pro card just wondering if any game now or in the
near future will use the the extra 128 meg ?

Halflife 2,Doom 3, Farcry ??

Can you tell a game to use the extra 128 megs and if so would that
speed up a game and or make the load times quicker.

I might do the 256meg ram just becuase i want the biuggest baddest rig
its only money.

Thanks.

You'll find that the benchmarks show the 128MB cards as being slightly
faster, but I doubt that anyone could tell the difference just by looking.
Current games don't really need 256MB, but if *it's only money* and you can
afford it, then it might be best to go with a 256MB version, and maybe even
a 9800 XT instead of a 9800 Pro. 256MB cards will undoubtably hold their
value more in years to come.

XT nahh might be my money but not worth the money.

9800 Pro Ultra will do me just fine.

Good question: From rummaging around on Tom's Hardware and Anandtech I
have to come to some conclusions.

-256MB is unnessesary unless you want to run 4xFSAA at 1280x1024 or
greater resolutions and does not offer a speed increase.

-DirectX9 Pixel Shader 2.0 games like Doom3/Half Life 2/Far Cry, etc
will require disabling FSAA for acceptable frame rates if you play at
1024x768 to 1280x1024 with most to max eye candy enabled.

- When 128MB textures become dominant you will have already purchased a
faster GPU video card.

Short and Sweet is that 256MB is great for having the 'baddest video
card on the block', but it's tough to find any games now that can take
advantage of 256MB, and that likely won't be until 2005 when we'll see
the jump from 64MB to 128MB texture maps.

Just my opinion, but I think it's one the benchmarks bear out on 128MB
vs 256MB card tests on the same chipset.

But the AUS$750 you say you're getting the 9800 Pro 256Mb is an terrible
deal (around US$570 at the current exchange rate).

Yes - Call of Duty requires a card with 256mb on card to run with extra high
detail textures and the Far Cry Demo uses a helluva lot of RAM so having
plenty of memory in one form or another is a must for smooth gameplay.
When I bought my 9100 8 months ago the choice was a 64mb at 250/230 or a
128mb at 250/200 - I chose the latter as I prefer to have the game run
smoothly and lose a frame or two.

Not for me or my buddy, you get the odd stutter with everything maxed and
4xAA8xAF. And we've edited the config file to grabe more system ram too.
Of course this is only in demanding parts of the game.

note really...

No.... a game will use it if its there and it needs it. Typical
benifits is about 2-3fps for newest games in highest modes in
1600x1200. whooopedefucking-dooooooo

Then you look like a fool. Get the 9800XT - then you have the
baddist rig.... but I doubt that.

In 3 months, ATI & Nvidia will push out their next cards.

Call of Doodie is a Quake3 engine game... its looks the same on a GF4
TI4200 with 64mb as an ATI with 128mb... Its nothing compared to a
modern game.
