100% CPU Utilization

S

SteveW

I have found twice now a significant slowdown with my
computer after installing MS antispyware. WHen I am
finally able to get the Task Manager up, the process
gcasDTserv.exe is utilizing 100% of CPU cycles. It
becomes very hard to terminate the process as the system
can't look for device input very well.

This does not occur all the time, but I figure it needs
to be looked into.

From Derek:
My experience was similar. However I was able to pin down the cause of my
problem because it happened twice after un-installing a similar software.
On the first occasion I solved the problem by un-installing and then
re-installing MSAS. The second time I just Un-installed MSAS, no problems
since.

I have had this very problem, however my computer simply
freezes.

I have found this ALWAYS happens when my comptuter goes
into the Registary Scan. I have had Task Mang. up before
I begun to scan to monitor the Usage of CPU and PageFile,
because when the computer was freezing, I got a popup
telling me that Windows was increasing my PageFile. This
didn't help the freezing, I even increased the PageFile
to over 2GB!!!

While watching the Scan, CPU usage stays about the same
(38%) then hits the registary scan, and goes steady up
and up, then when it hits 100% CPU usage, I see my
pagefile go up and up and up.

No matter how High i make the pagefile, it will ALWAYS go
to the limit and then freeze. !!!

Any suggestions? By the way the system I am running this
on isn't the best around... this obviously has something
to do with it.

P.S. in regards to previous replies, I am running Admin
Account, Win XP Pro.

Hi

Maybe some housecleaning and help with other tools is needed
on your PC.

Try this, all scannings/removals in *safe mode*

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Download/Install CCleaner, www.ccleaner.com

- Download/Install Lavasofts Adaware

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022-10319876.html?tag=list

* Also watch the video from Cnet about Adware within page
for best result.*

- Download Winsockfix, just a precaution if you loose your LSP.
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Restart in *safe mode*, press F8 during reboot

- Run CCcleaner and remove all temporarily junk, note that
you have 3 tabs for cleaning.

- Run Adaware, fullscan

- Run MSAS, fullscan, all options checked

- Restart

- Please report back if it works.

Do you have a large errors.log in c:\program files\microsoft antispyware?

Steve,

I am having the same problem, I fix it each logon by
exiting anti spyware and then reloading it. I looked at my
errors.log file and it is 1,421,058kb.

Could this be it?

Try shutting down Microsoft Antispyware, deleting or renaming the errors.log
file, and then restarting and see whether the problem is gone.

I'm not sure just what is causing the issue, but if this file keeps growing
on a given system, I'd consider uninstalling and waiting for a new build.
