100% cpu usage

When we first boot up the computer we are able to open
files located on the desktop but when we try to go into
MY COMPUTER, MY DOCUMENTS, CONTROL PANEL, and possible
other folders, the cpu usage goes directly to 100%. After
that the only thing we can do is to restart the computer
because nothing else will open.
We are running windows XP professional on a Intel P4
2.4GHz system.
Does anyone have a clue to what our problem is?

This is kind of a "canned" answer but, update and run your AV program.
Download, install and update the two free ad-removal programs from the
following links. Run them frequently. If the problem persists, open Task
Manager and see what is using all the resources. Uninstall or disable the
offending application.
