100% CPU USAGE IN WINDOWS XP PRO

My computer gets really slow for no particular reasons and i noticed that the
system idle process takes up usually 95% or so cpu. The cpu spikes every now
and then, no matter what i do or programs i run. I have used anti virus, anti
spyware software and do disk defragments regularly, and have all the updates,
so im not sure whats up. Any info would be great, thanks.

Sometimes applications that change the windows xp style (such as StyleXP) use
a lot of system resources. I used to have one, though I don't remember what
it was called, but it constantly ran my cpu usage at 100% even while idle.

English is obviously not your first language.

SYSTEM = Computer
IDLE = not busy
PROCESS = task that tracks when the computer is idle

In other words, the higher the better.

Steve - You are an idiot and a jerk.

"English is obviously not your first language."

You're an idiot for taking such a condescending attitude
towards someone who is looking for an answer to a question.
Your attempt to provide an answer failed.

You're a jerk for including your email address in a public
newsgroup.

I am sorry that this newsgroup has so far failed to help you. It is true
that the higher System Idle Process reads the faster your computer should
run, because Idle is what is left over after the CPU-using processes are
subtracted from 100%. Idle is not a "process" at all!

Everyone's CPU spikes, and, if you are quick enough, you can look in the
Task Manager and see which process is responsible, but spiking is not
usually considered a problem, unless the process causing it turns out to be
unneeded or unwanted. Google any process you are not sure of to find out its
nature.

You should provide us with more information. HOW LONG is the interval when
the CPU is running slow, and WHAT PROCESSES are using resources when that
happens? Are you sure System Idle is high when your system runs slow?

It is possible the slow running is due to needing more memory than you have.
This causes the system to use the hard drive for "virtual memory," a much.
much slower way to do memory tasks. Have you received any windows messages
regarding Virtual Memory lately? Also, look at the Performance tab on the
Task Manager. LET US KNOW how much Physical Memory you have, both the Total
and the Available.

System Idle Process simply is another name for the percentage of your system
is idle (available for use). In other words, if your System Idle Process
shows 95% it means that you system is currently using only 5% of its
resources and still has 95% available. Many make the mistake of thinking
that this figure refers to something being used when it actually means the
percentage not being used.
