100% CPU usage in Internet Explorer

A couple of weeks ago IE 6.0 started taking almost 100% of
my CPU in Task Manager. A few seconds after my IE window
opens, the cooling fan comes on and stays on high speed
until IE is closed. My system is HP Omnibook 4150B running
Win2K. I unistalled IE6 and installed IE5.5; no change.
Have run Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton, and Clean-up with no
effect. Help!

First eliminate any scumware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
