10 year old packard bell, not picking up hard drive

hi all,

My mate has a 10 year old packard bell, the bios on it is
AMBIOS 1.00.09 Bcor

He cleared the cmos and know it won't pick up the hard
drive and it also says boot diskette failure on the start
up screen.

He's tried other IDE cables with no success.

Do I have to flash the BIOS? If so could you post some
web links.

Read here, but what does this have to do with XP, as there is NO WAY that system is running on it. Hell, it would be hard for that system (which is at best Windows 3.1) to run Win98.
