1 user connects to the internet but 2nd user doesn't

I am using XP home with 2 accounts. I'm typing this under my user name and have full email and internet acess
My wife's account suddenly lost internet access last week. Can't use iexplorer - get the 'Page cannot be displayed' error. Email down too. But only on her user name - mine still works. Settings exactly the same
Used the Internet Explorer troubleshooter and Test TCP/IP configuration and think I've narrowed the problem down

Under my wife's account
I can ping any IP address on the internet with success (i.e. yahoo.com 66.218.71.114
Can't ping with with a host name "Unable to resolve target system name". (yahoo.com)
I can ping the DNS server (68.52.0.6)

Under my account all the above tests work

Why is host name resolution failing under my wife's account logon, but not on mine? We have the exact same settings in iexplorer/tools/internet options/connections/LAN settings: automatically detect settings. We have the exact same settings in TCP/IP properties: Obtain an IP address automatically, Obtain DNS server address automatically. I even tried setting 'Use the following DNS server address' to my DNS server IP address (found with the ipconfig/all command) and it didn't work. What am I missing

I just want to add that the EXACT SAME THING happened to me! My kids
have their own computer (running XP Pro), which has worked perfectly
for 2 years or so. About a week ago (April 23 or so) my daughter tells
me that she cannot connect to the internet. Well, I go take a look and
she is right, neither she nor I (I have a user account on it also) can
connect, but my son has absolutely no problem connecting with his
account! All of us have the exact same "administrator" rights. The
problem is bizarre! My situation is the exact same as that described
by Marshall4 in his post. All of my TCP/IP set-up looks perfect and is
the same for all accounts. Under my account I can "ping" anywhere just
fine, but I cannot telnet anywhere. When I try I get some weird error
about lacking a resource or something.

I called everybody I could think of for about a week: DSL provider,
Router vendor, Dell, etc. Nobody was any help. All pretty much agreed
that it sounded like an operating system problem. Today I gave up
trying to figure it out and reinstalled XP.

My best guess is that this is some adware/spyware program being
unusually malicious. My kids had allowed a lot of spyware/adware to
get on the system so I don't really mind re-installing. But I would be
curious to hear if anybody else has experienced this problem

Try the following from a command line (under both accounts, to be safe):

ipconfig /flushdns

I am using XP home with 2 accounts. I'm typing this under my user name
and have full email and internet acess.
My wife's account suddenly lost internet access last week. Can't use
iexplorer - get the 'Page cannot be displayed' error. Email down too. But
only on her user name - mine still works. Settings exactly the same.
Used the Internet Explorer troubleshooter and Test TCP/IP configuration
and think I've narrowed the problem down.
Under my wife's account:
I can ping any IP address on the internet with success (i.e. yahoo.com 66.218.71.114)
Can't ping with with a host name "Unable to resolve target system name". (yahoo.com).
I can ping the DNS server (68.52.0.6)!

Under my account all the above tests work.

Why is host name resolution failing under my wife's account logon, but not
on mine? We have the exact same settings in iexplorer/tools/internet
options/connections/LAN settings: automatically detect settings. We have
the exact same settings in TCP/IP properties: Obtain an IP address
automatically, Obtain DNS server address automatically. I even tried
setting 'Use the following DNS server address' to my DNS server IP address
(found with the ipconfig/all command) and it didn't work. What am I
missing?
