1.Pop ups while explorer is closed. 2.known sites won't load

I have two problems. If my computer is running but all
programs are closed (just desktop is showing) after a
brief period of time, pop-up ads begin coming up. If I
leave the computer running when I go to bed, in the
morning it is not uncommon to have 40+ pop-up ads sitting
on my desktop, most with security warnings seeking my
apporoval before downloading software. I am familiar with
pop-up issues when you are surfing but have never seen
system-initiated pop ups like this. I have deleted all my
cookies and temp internet files, run McAfee virus scan and
McAfee Disk Clean product but still can't get it to stop.

Second problem is that I can no longer get to known sites
like Google. If I type the address in the address bar I
get a response that says there is no registered domain by
that name. I am at a loss but obviously something has
gotten into my system. I have re-downloaded the most
recent version of IE from Microsoft and that didn't fix
anything.

Help!!!

Buddy,
How To: Deal with Unwanted Pop-ups
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/nopopups.htm
--
Trojan Qhosts hijacks the HOSTS file, however unlike normal redirectors,
this one hides the HOSTS file in the "Windows\Help" folder. It then
creates entries that redirects *all* major search engines to a website.
Note: this website has now been removed, thus the DNS errors.

Microsoft has released a cumulative patch for this vulnerability:
Simply go to Windows Update [hotfix 828750]

Note: not all machines are affected by the same Registry changes
but the user needs to verify in any case.

You can detect "Qhosts" via a new beta version of HijackThis
