1. how do I tell if my version of XP Professional is 32
or 64 bit versin to download the proper patch?

2. The MS site instructions re how to protect the
computer have three steps. First is to enable ICF. The
instructions (beginning once the control panel is open)
do not match my reality. eg instructions say to click
Networking and Internet Connections -- it is not a
choice. My apparent choices are: Network Connections
and, separately, Internet Options. I find the advanced
tab under internet options - but not the choice shown in
the instuctions. Under Network Connections, right
clicking on my connection (aol) and opeining properties
provides nothing - no choices or options.

Fyi, I am also running Norton Utilities.
3. I did install 38 (or so) updates yesterday to
Windows, could not get the Service Pack to install.

Thanks for you help

You have 32bit. Like owning a Ferrari, You would know if you had
64bit because of the extremely high cost

Open "Help and Support" anf type Firewall

I believe Norton's Utilities has a firewall. so, you don't need to worry
about ICF

Try,try, try again until you can get it. The servers are very busy
right now with all the other people trying to get the patch.
