0x8e issue with RADEON 9800 0xc000005 (access violation)

Hi, i am running a registered copy of windows 2003 ent ed. but the problem
is also
related to windows XP (occurs also on windows XP),

After playing a game for some time a BSOD occurs with the following message:

kernel mode exception not handles ati3duag.dll code 0x8e param1: 0xc000005

I have read a lot about it but havent been able to solve this issue yet,
this is why i am writing to you.

Checked everything, from ram to cpu, from d3d settings to opengl settings.
dxdiag, etc etc etc etc etc etc

The system i am running is a SMP system with 2x 3.06 GHz xeons, LSI logic
scsi controller and 2048 MB ram.
Virtual page file is turned off, enabling it with a range of 4gb doesnt
solve the problem.
Temperatures are all fine.

please help!!! i will almost throw the computer out of the freakin window!

Disabling page file is not reccommended, can lead to problems.
Since you have that amount of ram, page file will not be used excessively

0x000000c5 error often relates to a driver problem whilst 0x...8E often
relates to bios

Oke thanks, so far i figured this out myself. Any other suggestions????
I am running latest version of bios etc... 1.48A from ibm.

Should i try and contact IBM? is there a way to not completely crash out of
windows?
like capture it and enter a debugger?

I didnt have this problem on windows 2000, so its partly related to xp/2003.

For now, i will try the original drivers which came with the card (2000
drivers)

What Warning and Error Reports are in Event Viewer occurring about
the time when the problem arises.. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

The information on MSDN regarding this error says:

"A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler
didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues
(which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade)."

Do you have the latest driver updates from ATI for this card? Have
your tried contacting ATI's tech support in this regard?

Running with the page file turned off will make your overall memory
management less efficient and could result in reduced overall
performance.

This is because of the unused portions of memory allocation requests.
Windows components, device drivers and application programs all tend
to ask for memory allocations which are larger than they usually need
under normal circumstances. Windows memory management handles this
situation by only allocating RAM to those portions of the requests
that are actually used and by mapping the unused portions to locations
in the page file. Note that this mapping of unused portions to the
page file does not involve any disk activity. All that is needed are
entries in the memory mapping tables maintained by the CPU.

With the page file disabled, all requested memory must be given
addresses in physical RAM, even the unused portions. This means that
there will be less RAM available for other purposes such as disk cache
and for retaining memory pages for closed applications in anticipation
that these will likely be launched again.

A smaller disk cache can result in reduced performance, and having to
reload an application completely from the hard drive will take longer
than if it, or at least parts of it, were still present in RAM.

I will install microsoft debugging tools and the symbols for win2003 and ati
drivers.

Expect a complete error/debug log within an hour.

There are no error events around 11.56 (previous unexpected shutdown is at
11.56). All is nice and shiny blue.

well the latest driver is buggy. I found the correct driver to use:

CATALYST
4.4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and only catalyst 4.4!!!

i will post this in multiple newsgroups where ppl are having the same
trouble as i was experiencing.
