HELP! I supposedly installed Defender at the end of November 2006. I say
"installed" because doing so gave me the blue screen of death, covered with
all sorts of text that I didn't get to read before it all disappeared and the
computer restarted.

At any rate, when the computer did restart, the little Defenders icon was
present and it appeared to be installed. However, I haven't noticed that it
does anything, and when I try to look at the version I have installed
(Help-->About), I get the 0x80070002 error and a message that the system
can't find the file.

I recently found that a Defender update is available. I tried to uninstall
the version I have, but it doesn't show up in the Add/Remove software list!
The MS website said that the update will remove the old version of Defenders,
so I thought I'd give that I try (I assumed I had an earlier version, since I
had installed it before 12/31/06, the date of the newer release)...

And again, the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!

So I have no idea if I have Defender installed or not, nor do I know how to
uninstall the early version, assuming I even have it.

Any ideas??

Much thanks.

Please follow this steps in order.

Have you tried going to Windows Update and checking for available updates?
Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administrator.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an Administrator.

Can you go to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updates
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature update
with windows defender will fail until you have these f!les.

You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003"

Also some have had success with

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service, clear the contents of the DataStore
and Download folders, and restart the Automatic Updates service.
Stop the Automatic Updates Service.
Click Start, Choose Run, In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Select Properties.
Under Service status, click Stop.
Click OK.

2. Delete the Contents of the DataStore and Download folders.
Click Start, Choose Run, In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Delete the contents of both the DataStore and Download folders

3. Start the Automatic Updates Service
Click Start, Choose Run, In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Select Properties.
Under Service status, click Start.
Click OK.

If you want to unistall WD, you can try the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312/en-us

Also, Remove temp & unused files
Download Ccleaner
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during install.
CCleaner quick tour:
http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp

Run the above remover in safe mode with system restore tuned off then
Ccleaner on all 3 settings(windows, apps & issues) and clear anything found
reboot and see if it still exists.

Registry

CCleaner even has a built-in Registry Cleaner. It's not the best (not
CCleaner's main function), but it will find invaild registry entries that
most Registry Cleaners will not. Unlike the Disk Cleaners with a Registry
Cleaner, CCleaner does really fast scanning for Registry Issues. The reason
is CCleaner doesn't want to effect Windows performance or effect any
applications. It's better to be safe than sorry!

The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep running
it back-to-back until it finds nothing. One scenario is a registry key may
only be a reference pointing to a completely different location in the
registry and when it's removed then that reference link is also noticed as
being invalid on a subsequent scan. It's generally a good idea to keep
running the Issues scan until nothing is listed.

I'd recommend re-downloading WD, and saving to a known location--like the
desktop.
After the download is complete, disable real-time protection by your
antivirus for long enough to do the installation. please disable or turn off
as much other software that always runs as you can--real time antivirus
scanning, any other antispyware software, (Stop all programs that are open in
the bottom taskbar) etc.
