08-26-06 New EPSON 700, 4 doz 35mm scanned - then trans lid fails

Am wondering if anyone has had a similar experience with the new
700/750 series. The unit worked fine for 5 days, 3 doz slides
scanned... then yesterday the last 4 to be done, the transparency
lid produced infrared looking scans (flatbed works fine). The
mechanism is working, but not seeing the slide content as it should.

A sample slide has been put in Miscellaneous photos
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Epson_Scanners/
[Epson_trans_lid_fails_08_2006]. The one on left is fine (before
problem), with the same slide on right after (this is after full
curve has been applied in PhotoShop...as it would be virtually
black otherwise).

Checked system, re-loaded software, disconnected, reconnected
everything. The only strange occurrence, is the On/Off switch
would fail to turn off scanner a few times when being used (after
period of inactivity). My old 4870 never did this. The only way to
turn it off the 700 (when this occurs) is to pull the plug.

I've had my gripe... just wondering if anyone has had similar
experience with Epson 700's reliability, or if there is an easy fix
for the problem/s, or if it sounds like a hardware or software issue.

Have you tried scanning the slide using Epson's or the other program that
came with your scanner? I had a problem kind of similiar to yours. Everytime
I scanned in 48-bit it the scan would be black. I ended up scanning it in
the Epson software and it was fine. I went into my other program and went
into advanced options and saw that it was trying to use ICM or ICC. I
changed it to none and then did a search in my hard drive for any ICC or ICM
files that I created for my monitor, scanner, and printer and deleted them.
That fixed the problem.

Good luck!

Thanks Nathan... I'm scanning in 24 bit Colour, using Epson software in
Professional mode. Changing the colour options made no difference. Good
scans were set on Colourmatch (there was no change in scanning setup between
using flatbed and film scanner).

I'd send it to Epson and have them look at it. They have regional
repair centers across the US. Call tech support first to see if it is
something easy. No excuse for this to happen, I have done close to
1000 slides with mine, if it had a problem I'd send it back while it is
on warranty.

I've never had a problem with my Epson scanner, but I did have a
problem with two printers and they were quite good about replacing
them. In one instance, they sent me a new one (in a plain brown
box, not their store packing) and had me send the old one back to them
in the same box with shipping prepaid. It was under warranty.

In another case, different printer, out of warranty, I took it to
their local, but independent authorized repair place, paid the "look
see" fee, but they couldn't fix it (didn't have the parts or
something). I called Epson and they told me to ship it to them (I had
to get the box) and they fixed it in less than a week...same printer I
had the SN recorded. The only thing it cost me was the shipping.

Update... re transparency lid failure... have obtained a replacement
scanner, and new one works perfectly (without any changes to software,
just connected it).

Seems as though, the unit refusing to turn off was not right (aside from
the scanning failure).
