ZR50 capture problem -FIXED

Earlier I submitted the following post about being unable to use Firewire to dowload video from my Canon ZR50. The prob;em appeared to be intermittent and I attributed to a Window XP proble after reinstalling. It appears to be a Canon/Windows XP problem but is fixed. After much frustration, I discovered that the problem only occurs if you record the video at a slower speed (read that, longer tape duration) than standard. For example, I recorded some 90 min tapes at Long Play giving me 180 minutes of video. They would not load using Firewire (IEEE 1394) but would load using video capture card. Tapes recorded at Standard speed (90 minutes) would load. From now on, I gues i need to record at standard speed unless I wish to go the digital-analog-digital route

maybe WindowsXP and/or Canon can resolve this

Thanks to those of you who made suggestions

ORIGINAL POST FOLLOWS

After reinstalling Windows XP, Moviemaker will not
capture video from my canon ZR50 Digital Video camera.
The camera is connected using an IEEE1394 port (TI
controller.) After connecting the camera PC recognizes
it, shows the correct camera on the list of video devices
(Canon ZR50 and WinTV capture card), after pressing
next,I am given the choice of File mane and place to save
video, after selecting these, I select video setting
(Best quality for playback on pc), next. Then I've tried
both options - Capture tape automatically OR Capture tape
manually. After pressing next, tape rewinds and starts,
process moves to second step, capturing video, then stops
with the following VERY HELPFUL message, "An unknown
error has occurred.

Is this a codec problem? I have tried all of the options
in the initial capture screens without success

PC is a HP Pavilon, 3.0 GHz processor, 512 meg ram, 120
gig HD, 86 gig free, built in Firewire

The problem is that recording at the ELP tape speed
encodes the video in a format is not DV-compliant,
so it is not compatible with standard DV decoders
(like the one in Windows XP).

So it sounds like a Canon problem to me -- not a
Windows XP problem.

Ahhh maybe Bob, but then my Canon 630i works perfectly with WMM under XP.
Captures without any hassles at all.

Is your recording speed SP or LP? You definitely
shouldn't have any problem using SP, but you
"might" have a problem using LP.

Hi there,

For what its worth. I checked it out using my MV500i in the LP mode and
captured it using MM and had no problems. I can not at this moment remember
what the manual said about audio quality in LP mode, but at this time
cannot remember thinking the audio sounded poor...the manual says something
about it being forced down to 12bit I think...but I saw/heard no problems.

But, LP mode on an MV500i may not be the same as ELP !!!
