"unknown error" MM2.1 - Canon ZR50

Guest

I cannot import video in any format with any method in MM2.
I have all SP's for XP Pro (SP2 + all options)

I keep getting "unknown error" when attempting to use wizard to import from
my Canon ZR50 MC.

Firewire connection.

The camera shows up in XP Pro - and is "avaialable".
However - all attempts to capture video in MM2.1 - fail with an "unknown
error"

Please help.

Hello,

If movie Maker crashes via any of the known routes to Microsoft it will
give you the chance to send them an error report.

Did you get that option? If yes you can liase with Microsoft direct and
they will be able to tell you what caused the crash.

Have you tried your camera on another computer? if yes, do you get the
same fault?

Have you looked at the properties for your capture card and satisfied
yourself that there is no basic fault with it or its instalation?

Takes Deep Breath.....

Have a look at the FAQ I post in here every day at 1300hrs GMT (actually
its BST) see the advice for installing SP2, DirectX and the Codec pack.
Follow the instructions exactly.....important

Why it may be needed. DirectX is not one program or utility.....its a
collection of procedures that conform to certain international standards as
well as the needs of Windows. One of the very important ones is the software
that talkes to your camera...stop, pause, fast forward, play etc....and if
that instalation is any way malformed...you are on a looser. Without knowing
for certain and sometimes even if you are certain the only real way of
dealing with the problem is to go to the beginning.....and thats where the
advice in the FAQ comes in...start where the above files are mentiones and
check the method a bit further on.

If the re-install of the software does not solve your problem.....

Although I will contradict this later...Firewire cards based on the
Texas Instruments chipset have in the past been known to not function at all
wel with DV cameras and Movie Maker. Because I have a very resent TI chipset
card I can tell you that their are no problems with their most recent
chipsets....I have not yet discovered anything like a "made before" date on
that one.

Hope some of that helps.

Best Wishes.....John Kelly
