ZoneAlarm: browser lag on 1st Web access

Both of my browsers (IE and Opera) have a long lag time
on the 1st Web access after startup. The lags are
usually in the range of 1.5 minutes to 2.5 minutes, but
after one browser has made a successful connection,
subsequent tries with either browser go normally.
The OS is Windows XP Pro, and this has been going on
since I installed ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 2007.
If I disable ZoneAlarm right after startup, the 1st Web
access with either browser goes normally. ZoneAlarm
is doing something which causes the long delay on the
1st Web access, but I don't know how to prevent it.
Does anyone here know of a way?

Either call ZA tech support and let them help you or get rid of ZA period.

Doesn't the new security suite use Kaspersky as the antivirus? If so,
that's most likely the reason for the lag, although I don't understand why
it doesn't happen on every page. All I know is that, when I trialed
Kaspersky, my websurfing speed slowed down considerably. The problem is
all the security stuff scanning web pages for possible malware before
allowing the connection. My NOD32 AV does the same thing, but is
lightning quick. However, I used Zone Alarm free (without the additional
scanners) and my browsing speed was much slower than it is now using the
old Kerio 2.1.5. That's one of the main reasons I don't run suites - they
seem to take more resources and slow down your system rather than using
separate apps. Are you trialing ZAS or have you purchased it? If you're
just trialing, there are other setups that are just as effective, cheaper,
and cause much less drag on your system.

I have no problem with "surfing". It's just the 1st web
connection after startup of the PC that has the delay.

Which OS and how much RAM? How many programs do you usually have running?
