ZoneAlarm 6.5!

P

Pat Willener

Last week, ZoneAlarm (free and pro) 6.5.700.000 was released.
Many users experienced tremendous problems (including this one)!

Yesterday Zone Labs released version 6.5.714.000. This time *everyone*
seems to experience problems; incompatibilities with most anti-virus
tools, inability to shut down or start up Windows, and BSOD.

Please, everybody who is still on version 6.1 or earlier, wait until the
problems have been corrected. See http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/ if
you want to read some details...

Was there any version of 6.1 that all users seem to regard as without
problems? (I'm still using v5.5.094.000.)

I use 6.1.744.001. No problems at all here
(XP Pro SP2, all pathces, avast! anti-virus)

Oh, one problem. Each time avast! updates it program, or anohther
program does this, ZA ask for permissions again. Really annoying

I would regard that as a problem. My 5.5.094.000 certainly doesn't do that.

It doesn't ask for permission every time your antivirus updates, even
though you have given it full permission?

It asks when the program is updated, as it then actually is a new
file. But I guess all anti-viruses would do that. How can they now
that the new .exe file is OK. It's a new file replacing the old.

Sure. Mine has always done that. If not. A trojan could replce your
anti-virus exe-file with another trojan and that would gain access.

Ah, I see. Sorry, Lars; I misunderstood you. I thought you meant it
asked permission for updating the virus definition database, which would
really be a pain. I didn't read your post carefully enough. Your "one
problem" is, therefore, not really a "problem" at all; is it?

I don't have the problem with antivirus, since I use AVG - no problems with
AVG and ZA that I have seen.

Yes, thanks for your input. I'm afraid that I misunderstood what Lars
described as being a "problem." So, if I don't hear of any real
negatives regarding 6.1.744.001 from someone else, I may soon try it
myself.

Not for me. BUt I can see that novice users can have a problem when
the firwall keeps asking for new accesses each time the AV program
updates, each time Spybot S&D program updates, each time Ad-Aware
updates it's program etc etc.

What they do is that they always press YES (no matter what program
asks for access) and then the whole point of the protection is gone

Yes, ZA does require a certain amount of continuing discrimination on
the part of the user, unfortunately. But I doubt if that's likely to
change any time soon.
