Zone firewall problems?

B

Bruce Lawrence

Has anyone had any interference from zone alarm before. I had Zone Alarm
installed, but was having problems with it so i went to add/remove and
uninstalled it. That was a month ago but now I try to do updates for AVG or
Adaware or eTrust EZ armor, or Spybot, they all say internet connection
failed.
I looked in msconfig start services and seen zone stuff in there so deleted
it. Now i have problems with passwords not working.
Did zone screw around with registry maybe or what I have no viruses to see.
Any ideas. XP Pro is on one HDD and xp2003 server on another.
Thanks for any help you guys have been on the mark with all advice so far.

A quick look at ZoneLab's website would have lead you to:

http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/CompleteUninstallNonNT.html

which gives a very thorough description of the proper way to remove ZA when
the regular uninstall falis to do the job.

I did manage to think ahead a little and tried ZA's way. I could not delete
any of their files . I checked now in the C: and in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Zone
there are about 12 files and I can't delete them. When I did a check using
search nothing came up.
Any way of deleting them.
If it helps the subfiles are:
cerbprovider.pvx
html.tdr
ssleay32.dll
vsdb.dll
vsdb_oem1051.dll
vsmon.exe
vsmon_oem1051.dll
vsregexp.dll
vsruledb.dll
vsruledb_oem.dll
vsvault.dll
zlparser.dll
I do usually go to the problem first, but I like coming here because people
are usually friendly and easier to understand.
Thanks for any help

Hi Bruce,
I had the same problem. Caused by Zone Pro upgrade.
While trying to install the upgrade I clicked on"upgrade" instead of "clean
install". Everything went wrong after that.
Had no Internet connection. My ISP told me they have lots of problems with
Zone. They told me, the only way to fix it, format the drive. I did,
reinstall everything. Including Zone Pro. Now I always select "clean
install" for the upgrades.
No problems!!

Interesting...I've been 'upgrading' my copy of Zone Alarm Pro since version
2 and never had a problem.

I wonder if the OP knows that you can backup your Zone Alarm settings so
there's no need to reconfigure it after a clean install.

I have used ZA since D-day and found that when upgrading it is often OK to
keep the old settings but they do collect a lot of junk. So I now always
reset the program control to zero and use the ZA defaults. The I take a look
and what has been entered and usually need to make a few changes since ZA is
ultra cautious and BLOCKS quite a few safe places
I agree the backup is useful, in case one has a crash of some kind and needs
to reset ZA quickly.

I wonder if you realize there is no need for Zone Alarm and that it just
causes problems?

You probablity just need to reset the Windsock2 protocol stack. I know that
"winsockxpfix.exe" should fix this (It do for me!).

It only causes problems if you don't know what you are doing. It is actually
better than the XPSP2 firewall.
