Zone alarm

Hi,
I wrote a message about two days ago and it didn't seem to get there, so
here goes again.
Can anyone tell me if Norton has a fire wall?
I keep getting a pop-up from ZA to install an up-date and I thought I had
the same up date that they say I need. I try up-dating again, but run into
problems. Something about the vector??
Any help? Thanks....Nel

I just spent 170.00 for a tech. to come out and get rid of a virus for
me,(bagle) and he installed the Norton because the AVG won't get my PC
running. So, I kelp it. I really don't like it either, but it did get the
virus and AVG didn't.
Is it possible to run Norton and AVG?
Thanks, Nel

I am running Norton AV 2003 and AVG7(free) with Zone Alarm Pro (WinXP)
All three are getting along fine.
(Same with WinME - Dual Boot)

Thanks Sunny. I'm running Norton 2003 also.
Are you having pop-ups from ZA saying there is an up-date? I must be doing
something wrong, because I think I up-date and the next thing you know I get
the pop-up again.
If you have any ideas about this please let me know.....
Thanks again....Nel

Overview > Preferences > Select, "Check for Updates Manually".
If an Update is available you have to download it, then install it with ZA
closed.
(Or leave well enough alone) :)
I "check for updates" after reading posts on NGs confirming that they work
OK.

???

I have ZA pro and I've always had auto update - when it advises of an update
I either download it or click 'tell me later' (or whatever the hell gets rid
of it). Then when it does download (it downloads the full version not just
an update - strange!) I just execute the file while ZA is still running,
that way it detects ZA and asks if you want to perform an update or clean
install..

Never had a problem yet!

Nor me, however, I personally never use "auto" anything. :)

Thanks guys for your answers,
Will try again. I couldn't understand why they want you to reinstall the
whole thing either. That always stumped me. I never know if I should
'update' or 'Clean'..I've been clicking on 'ask me later', That's getting to
me though, but will try again your suggestions......Nel

'Update' lets you keep all the current settings, program permissions, etc,
while 'Clean' starts everything fresh and wipes all the preference settings
you have.

Basically, if ZA has been running fine and you have no problems at all,
clicking 'Update' will save you time reconfiguring everything you want to
give access rights to!

If, OTOH. you have some problems or maybe you're not sure what has access
rights and what doesn't, clicking 'Clean Install' will reset everything back
to a new install and ZA will need to be 'setup' again to give access
rights/denies to the programs you use.

Perhaps the 'ask me later' is the problem - I doubt any of the updates are
installed then so even though they are downloaded they are not installed.
Just run the latest version - 5.5.062.004, and follow the above 'Update' or
'Clean' based on how happy you are with the current program permissions.
That should solve your problems.

As for the 'Auto' feature - I understand Sunny's concerns but I find that ZA
doesn't actually download anything until I let it - all it does is check the
website to see if a later version is available or not, then if it is I still
have to select 'download' to get the file, so I'm still in control. It just
saves me time checking the website each day manually just to see what the
latest version number is..... The AV software is far more 'automatic' in
that it usually downloads the update and installs it without me needing to
do anything at all!!!

Hope all that helps..

Cheers

I'll try, if it pops up when I'm not in the middle of something. I'll
click 'up date' I guess, as I've had no problems with it except for this
popping-up...They ask about the Vector something or other I don't
understand....I think that Norton has a fire wall anyway...
Thanks again.....Nel

Try and write down exactly what it says and then post it here - I'm sure
someone can solve any problem you may encounter! I've heard some people
comment that Norton firewall isn't that good, so I'd suggest you try and
solve the issues with ZA rather than swap (at this stage anyway). Have you
also looked at ZA's website/FAQ to see if there is any mention there of this
problem??

Anyway - give it a try and as I said, note down exactly what error message
comes up during install, then post it here.

Good luck

Thanks Martin,
That's something I haven't done, go to the ZA web site...
I'll also try to write down what it says exactly....Nel
