Zeus-Master of Olympus and XP

G

Guest

I have recently upgraded to xp home from Windows Me and cannot reinstall my
Zeus game. It is on the program menu, and when I install the CD it gives the
option to install. If I click "install", the CD-ROM sounds like it does
overtime, then nothing. No freeze, no screen change, no zeus.

I've tried changing the compatability both in Zeus properties, the setup
icon and through the compatability wizard. Now what?

Help please! I like this game! NB: I am very VERY new to xp.
Many thanks.

P.S. I have checked through the threads in this group. Does no-one else play
this game??
Extra info: What was on the start menu was just a shortcut and is now
deleted. A search of the whole system reveals nil installed. I have an
administrator account on xp. I believe there may be a patch some where to
help with this. Can some one direct me to an appropriate place? I've
searched on yahoo and google but I'm not entirely sure of what I'm looking
for (not used to patches) and I am also a little worried that any patch may
just give my computer some bugs!
I have 394mB RAM and a firewall installed (NIS FE 2004).Anything else you
need to know to help me get this game installed, just let me know. Thanks.

Hi Kitty,

Was the game installed on that drive, and if so, did
you completely erase the drive before installing XP?

Hi Jimmy
Thanks for the reply. I went to bed last night so just signed back in now:-(
The game was originally installed, then went to PC World for a "healthcheck"
under guarantee (yes, I know....) They wiped the drive, then installed xp.
Grrrrrrrrrr!
Help.
The CD I have is the original from when I it was installed on Me.

Hi Kitty,

The store might have left that game partially installed.

Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and patch):

Step A: To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Step B: In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete the game and then
the game's folder especially if you previously experienced problems
with a patch, or if you installed the Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc.

Note: Click Start to Search or Find your game. Many times there are two installs
of the same game on a system and the patch installs to the wrong one. Also if you
installed a Trial version of the game, this could be causing a conflict.. Uninstall it
and delete the folder.

Step C: Reboot your computer, Install and Run Regcleaner and if it finds any
stray registry keys for the game, delete them., and re-install the game.
Regcleaner Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

Step D: Play a single player game, using an administrators account if necessary.

Step E: Download new game patches or mods in case the old ones are corrupt.
Double click the patch/mod to install it. If it's a .zip file, unzip it into the
game's folder and follow the instruction in it's readme.txt file.

Step F: Reboot your computer, verify that your game is working properly, and
re-enable any programs that you disabled using the method in Step A.

Cheers,
Jimmy S.

OK. Tried all that. Except the patch bit: I haven't found one yet. That was
one of my queries. Again the CD loads, says "Welcome to Zeus" and I click
install, then..........nothing. At least my registry is clean now!
Thanks for the suggestions. If you hear of as patch or XP compatable please

Hi Kitty,

Don't dress in black just yet...

Try installing and playing that using 95/98 Compatibility mode.

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to find them is: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

If you'd like to learn more information about compatibility mode, you can click the
link in the Compatibility tab that reads "Learn more about program compatibility",
or watch this Application Compatibility Power Point Presentation:

Hi Jimmy

Thanks for the help. Tried that and it still won't load. (Several
different option combinations in compatability wizard).

The site doesn't have a patch for this game so far but I have it on
favourites and will keep looking. I'll get back to the store some time too:
if this happened with me, they've bound to have done it to other customers
who upgrade as well and might have a suggestion to make other than "Play
another game" !!

Thanks for all your help. I'll dress in grey ish (aka bright pink at the
mo!) and keep looking.

Cheers!

Hi Kitty,

I looked up the game on ntcompatible.com and it seems to be
one of the few games that will not work on Windows XP. Too
bad I couldn't find any indication that it was a DOS game though
since if it was, we could have used this method to get it to work:
--
When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available,
or search at: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a :)

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php Or try MS Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/downloads/trial.asp
which allows you to install DOS or to run any operating system inside XP.

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm For sound
issues use: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound Good Luck! :)

|
|
|
|
| Cheers!
