Zero Byte JPG Files ????

J

Jay

XP-Pro SP1

For whatever reason, I have many .jpg files that have been changed to
zero-byte files. Not ALL but several dozen and not all from the same
dates, etc. No viruses or spyware detected. Ran a thorough scandisk and
defrag but still the zero-byte file persist. All files are Nikon Digital
Camera files and they WERE ok when viewed after downloading to HD and
for months afterwards.

Any ideas, am at a total loss here???

Thanks, Jay

Could be the act of a virus or Trojan.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

How ?

Your post lacks substantiating information. There are malware that target graphics files,
MP3 files, MPEG, files etc. as a part of their respective payloads.

Because the files are not on a box connected to the internet and never
has been. The box, however is connected to the LAN via Cisco 24 port and
is behind a Firebox 2000 hardware firewall. It is not possible for this
box to grab anything from the net OR anything from a possibly infected
box on the wire.

Well that doesn't "prove" that there is no virus. In fact it is only an assumption based
upon a set of conditions. Those conditions just lesson the chance. The PC is still
connected to a LAN and the infector can be introduced from the LAN, read/write media, CD
Media, etc.

Files don't go from 2MB dSLR generated JPEGs to 0byte files, enmasse, for no reason.

Thanks anyway, I'll look somewhere else. I'm not a novice by any
stretch, just not an XP person, FreeBSD is my game as well as Novell
CNI/MCNE. And there was no "enmasse" condition as only a few dozen files
out of a total of over 1,000 were affected. The collection of affected
files didn't even share the same creation and last modified dates nor
were they in the same directory heirarchy. If I say there was no virus
then there was no virus. I know my system well enough to know that.
Thanks for trying anyway.

Cheers

Jay

While I've not experienced data loss on .Jpg files, I have had more
than a handful of .Wma files that got truncated. They weren't used
beyond Media Player and I've never determined how a 3:30 song
ends up as 1:10 or whatever. Best I can remember I've had maybe
8 song modules have this issue. I wouldn't be surprised if it is not a
problem related to indexing or scanning Multimedia files that got them.
If it was virus related, I'd expect it to nick all .Jpg files and not just
pick and choose a few. Hopefully, you've got data backups of them.

Yes, ALL of my photos are archived on CD. It's just this anomaly that's
bugging (pun intended) me. We're on to something concerning an app that
was loaded during a testing phase that we "believe" may be responsible
as it's been reported in some circles that this same behaviour occured.
Just can't remember which app it was at the moment.

Bit rot.

Happens to the best of us. If it helps any, you can attribute your problem
to stray Neutrinos from the Solar Wind in conversations with family and
friends. Don't keep the truth from your doctor, though.
