Antivir, AVG or NOD32?

I've been using AVG. Last week my computer slowed considerably. I
did a full scan with AVG and it showed nothing. I then ran Spybot and
it turned up 3 virus files. One was Alexis. I forget the names of
the other two. I'll be very interested in your replies.

Hi xxx,

Antivir, AVG or NOD32?

For what it's worth, I have a strong preference for NOD32. In my
experience of it over the past four years, it's fast, accurate,
stable, and very light on system resources (and it doesn't matter if
one has a powerful and fast machine; why put up with something more
demanding on resources if one doesn't have to?).

I've never tried AntiVir, so I really can't comment on that, but I
have tried AVG in the past (and I'm familiar with the experience of
several people using it now). I definitely prefer NOD32 over AVG.

You are comparing free AV with paid AV.

No, he's comparing free AV with free anti-spyware/adware (assuming by
Spybot he means Spybot S&D) when it comes to spyware detection.

Since the OP doesn't know the difference between virus and spyware, NOD32
as others suggest is probably a good choice now that it's expanded the
protection to cover those areas as well. Eset has a reputation to preserve
so I doubt they'll allow that end of the product to do any worse than the
AV protection.

Oops, I didn't notice the RE: on what to my newsreader/server is listed as
the first post of the thread. So just ignore me then.

You're doing the apples and oranges thing here. :)
One was Alexis.

Which is not a virus (nor even malware most likely).
I forget the names of the other two.

Probably not viruses either - don't be too harsh on an AV that doesn't
bother with some spyware/adware. Spybot is designed to deal with such
things and has a niche because AV didn't use to bother about them.
I'll be very interested in your replies.

I predict Nod32 will be the predominant answer among the choices
offered.

Hee hee! Prediction after the fact is a pretty safe bet, eh? ;-)

Yes, but I didn't read the other responses first to make that
prediction. :)

Actually I expected others to chime in with their favorite
recommendations rather than to actually pick from the choices given. :)
I see you chose Nod32 - wha it a close race? :))

I Know NOD 32 does pretty good in most reviews and in fact is probably just
about unbeatable....(But it costs MONEY!!.).... I have been using Avast for
the past 2 years....and really as far as I am concerned ...you cant beat
it!!.....Yeah I know its FREE!!....that must make it suspect right??....Not
at all!!........I have just about used every AV program out there at one
time or another....and years ago AVAST was really a crap program......but
not now......
Sometimes it really is possible to get something really GOOD for FREE!!.....

The trouble with AV software is that you don't know how good or bad it
is until you get infected. Most people installing AV software have half
a clue about security or they wouldn't be installing it.

actually, you don't even know then... all that gives you is one data
point, it doesn't tell you how good the product is in general...

i disagree - nowadays most people installing av software are doing it
because computer related media tells them they need to...

And, best, among all, listed or not, please???

Kaspersky, F-Prot, and still NOD32. This is not an exhaustive list but I
consider these the tops.
