yet another vista mail stuck outbox

Have deleted the message store an number of times, rebuilt & gotten things to
look "ok". Mail is set not to auto send on completion. Click Reply to
message in Inbox. Click Send & reply is moved to outbox. Click Send/Receive
- message is actually sent, but stays in Outbox. Can not move or delete.
Message will be sent again if I click Send/Receive with same "stuck" results.
If I reboot to safe mode, can send message & it gets moved to Sent Items as
expected.

FWIW: Have 60-day Norton Internet Security 2007 that came with laptop,
LiveUpdate to "current". Outgoing email scan=off. Same result if incoming
email scan = on or off.

Mail compact does not work because it's always getting "folder is currently
in use by Windows Mail or by another program". Works ok in Safe Mode.

I think if you want things to work correctly you should get rid of Norton.
That said, after disabling email scanning (both directions) you need to
remove your account and add it back again, as Norton has screwed it up
already.

Not too fond of Norton to begin with, but it came pre-loaded.

What replacements have folks found to be worthy & Vista compatable? I think
I've seen that McAfee has been causing fits.

disabled all email scanning, removed account & added it back. No change -
still won't move message from OutBox to Sent Items after Send/Receive.

Some are saying AVAST and others NOD32. I don't have any experience with
them.

I've heard good things about the free versions of AVG and Avast.
Whichever antivirus program you wind up installing, install it with
Windows Mail closed, and custom configure it immediately for no
email scanning, before the next start of Windows Mail.

tried to resend same message with same result.

Went to Safe Mode, clear "stuck" message, deleted account & reentered
account. Back to Normal mode with NIS on, new message sent, stuck in OutBox.

Safe Mode, cleared messges. Back to Normal. Turned off all parts of
Norton, including Activate System. Created new account; made default.
Create new message. Sent & again "stuck".

Tried a couple of other variations too without success. Only way so far I
can send mail and have message moved to Sent box is via Safe Mode.

You may want to try it with Norton completely uninstalled.

This is getting really weird. I wanted to verify that Norton was causing the
problem, so I decided to copy the disk with xxcopy & make it bootable with a
Vista RC1 dvd and then fully remove Norton. (This laptop has Vista Home
Premium preloaded with no o/s dvds.) After Vista "fixed" the cloned drive
with drivers, etc., I tried Mail before doing anything. You guessed it - it
works fine. I had discovered not only were sent messages getting stuck in
the OutBox, but I could not delete or move any others. Now, on the cloned
drive, all works. Tried to get the orig drive to work by copying the Mail
directory structure from the clone. No joy. Tried to copy the same image
that I used for the clone to the orig drive. No joy. Did it again, using
xxclone to make the drive w2k bootable (so the Vista repair would activate),
at tried again. No joy. Copied again directly from the clone to the orig.
No joy. Only the cloned drive has working mail (other than using Safe Mode
on the orig). Norton reports to be working on clone, so doesn't look like
that's it. Have a feeling it's sometime HP did - and I've disabled all the
HP phone homes that I can find (both drives). Like I said - weird.

So removing Norton fixed all that?

I figured as much.

Thanks for the feedback.

No, you missed the whole point of the post. Norton was never removed. Mail
started working when I cloned the disk only.

I guess I didn't really make it too clear, but I never did remove Norton -
only cloned the drive. The Mail problem seems to be "fixed" only on the
cloned drive.

i have the same problem. except i don't have norton or such program. i'm on a
safe network. there is a email stuck in my outbox. it's obviously a bug. to
bad there is no fix, since mail is kina important if you can't access my
mails. i suggest to switch to opera or maybe pegasus.
