"... which had been running ok apart from a couple of crashes ..."
That's like saying, "I'm doing fine except for this gaping wound in my
stomach.."

And when you reboot - what happens?
Power off for a few minutes and power on?

Make sure the monitor is plugged in.

Does the computer make up a beeping noise when you turn it on or did you
install any new hardware? Both lights permanently and no screen display is
sometimes is a sign on some motherboards that there is incompatiable hardware
attached to the motherboard.

It might sound stupid, but I have RAM installed on a computer and half the
times it works, the other half the system won't boot because the RAM is
incompatiable.

When I reboot what happens is this;
the green light and the red hard drive in use light come on.

the green monitor light comes on as though it is about to leap into life.

the orange monitor button comes on and it goes to sleep

thewre is a continuous humming from the hard drive as though it is
processing information.

There is a further development.

I asked an 'engineer' to look at the problem. He says replace the
motherboard, processor, ram and fan. Any comments pon that?

Further still. While he was looking at this problem I hooked up and old
computer so that the kids could at least go on the net, msn etc which is the
meaning of their lives.

I get up this morning and guess what!!

This one has crashed as well with exactly the same problem!

I.ve tried swapping the monitors - no luck gives a message of no input and
goes to sleep.

While the first computer had crashed the router it hosted still allowed me
access to the net on my other remote computer.

Unfortunately with the second computer crash I've lost connectivity - the
computers are 'talking' but no net connection.

ho hum.

any suggestions anyone?

could there be a virus problem?

are the two identical crashes just a coincidence?

shall I just bin these computers and get a new one?

any help appreciated

thanx

What kind of surge protection is on these computers?

no surge protection so far as I know.

A further development!

the second crashed computer has suddenly come to life again. I'm using it now!
What can explain this?

Is the first crashed computer worth repairing?

could it be overheating?

is the start button simply stuck or shorting?

what is the meaning of life?

thank you for your help
