XPProSP1 - VPN - Verifying

Pete

XPPro SP1 laptop is hanging on 'Verifying' when trying to
MS-VPN connect to a remote client.

The Win2K desktop sitting next to the laptop with the same
VPN connect info is able to establish a VPN connection to
the target client without any problems.

Outbound VPN from this location is not an issue as it is
tested and confirmed on other systems. FW settings are
configured and tested to allow remote connectivity.

The failure at this point is isolated to the WinXP
installation. I've noticed several mentions of this but
haven't found a working solution in relation to my
specific issue.

In the connectoid properites I've specified the connect
type to pptp but it will still hang on Verifying.

Any other suggestions?

I neglected to mention that there is no
firewalling/filtering active on the WinXP system itself.

Yes GRE and other required configs are in place to allow
VPN transmission to/fro.

And the error is of course the 721 message.

WinXP is listed as an effected platform in KB 810839
however the provided Hotfix from support will work
specifically on Win2K installations only.

I did suggest that this be updated in the KB article but
whether that suggestion was noted is unclear.

So now I have a hotfix that does not work for XP.

Next?

This is fun carrying on a whole thread by myself.

After reading the actual details of the HF it specifically
notes that the fix is meant to be applied to the "Windows
2000 PPTP Server" so my last remark should be ignored.

Have you checked the router on the "client" side to see if it supports
PPTP Passthrough?
