xplorer2 has been released

I haven't seen this news posted here yet, so ...

Xplorer2, the successor to 2xExplorer, has completed beta testing and has
been released - version 1.0.0.0.

Check it out. I think it's the best file manager by far.

http://netez.com/xplorer2 (home page)
http://netez.com/xplorer2/x2lite.htm (download page for freeware version).

"The free version is for private (home) or academic (school & university)
use only. You cannot use it in any commercial context, including but not
limited to: corporate, office, military, government etc. All commercial
users must obtain a licence for the full version."

The free version has much less features than the pro one :

Just downloaded the free version. Thought I'd try it out. To judge
by the comparative table of features on the Web site, it lacks
some of the features in my free version of Power Desk 5, but it
has some features free Power Desk lacks.

Well, I very much like xplorer2, but as long as it doesn't support icon
overlays I'll always need Windows' own Explorer...

I'm talking about customized folder icons, used by TortoiseCVS or
TortoiseSVN (version control clients), to indicate the version control
state of the folder.

Now that I'm complaining anyway, does anyone know of an alternative file
manager that does icon overlays?

Thanks,
Wald

Best is a very subjective term... compare it too http://www.fileant.com
fileant uses a bit more memory but does a lot more and its interface is
threaded on an mdi form so each panel is a seperate form window. Imho
2xExplorer became popular because its name indexes first alphabetically on
most download sites. It has the word explorer in it which ms may have a
problem with in the future, they took action against 'Windows' Commander
(which only gets downloads because it was one of the first and people follow
downloads like sheep imho). Xplorer2 showed illegal memory modifications
when I ran through a profiler. 00:00:14.181: HEAP[XPLORER2_UC.EXE]: HEAP:
Free Heap block 818c80 modified at 818ca0 after it was freed. So it may do
funny stuff to win9x after prolonged use (it is version 1.0.0.0 so I forgive
).

The earlier version of xplorer2 in W98 need Dependency Walker running in
order to work. Does ver. 1.0 now run by itself?

I only tried it in win2000 and Dependency Walker closed it when I ran it. It
would just be a bad API call somewhere, it will probably be fixed when he
reads this. At a guess xplorer2 is doing something like altering the windows
icon cache after its handle is freed (on nt systems this probably does not
matter too much).

FileAnt looks like Shareware, not freeware or donationware. There homepage
says "Support FileAnt by Buying It" and "Register FileAnt Now and be
registered forever". And the price is $30. Looks like shareware, not
donationware.

I'm running XP, but I think x2 won't need Dependency Walker under W98. You
might want to give it a try.

Quite a lot was added to the program after alpha 59, particularly in terms
of the user interface. The new freeware version relies on the Windows find
files function and doesn't have scrap panes like the pro version. But those
advanced features may not be in alpha 59 either. You may just want to give
it a try and see if you like the new version.

Someone incorrectly imho said Xplorer2 was 'best file manager by far' and I
responded which is my right.
Xplorer2 nags you for money and is shareware.
FileAnt does not 'nag' you (at least not in the past 10 versons, the next
version may) and is shareware.

I just tried out Explorer2 this afternoon. It's on my computer
now. The free or "lite" version doesn't nag you at all. As a file
manager, it seems pretty good. I like the preview pane function,
which is good for viewing graphic files. I like the built-in file
shredder. It is fast, and seems stable. It has a good tree view,
which for some crazy reason, some other file managers don't have.

As for it being the best file manager around, not for me. I still
haven't found anything to beat the free version of Power Desk 5.
Things in Power Desk that aren't in the free Explorer2 are
horizontally split screen, built in zip and unzip, the ability to
peek into archives and see the files inside, and even access them
without opening the archive, and built in encryption-decryption.
The program launch bar in Power Desk isn't in Explorer2, either.

About the only important feature that Explorer has that the free
Power Desk doesn't have is the preview screen. Power Desk has got
one, but it's crippled in the free version.

Xplorer2 is not freeware and does have a nag screen and says it expires
after 21 days which I do not have a problem with. Maybe you are referring to
2xexplorer which I did not test.
Xplorer2 'seems' stable but anything that crashes in Dependency Walker by
writing to memory it does not own is most definitely not stable.

All of these things you mention are in FileAnt except encrypt/decrypt for
which I personally would use the industry standard sha256 encryption in
7-Zip.

It's usual to point out when you introduce shareware into a discussion
for comparison purposes. Otherwise, people expect you are talking only
about freeware.
Xplorer2 nags you for money and is shareware.

xplorer² lite is the free version. The link
<http://netez.com/xplorer2/x2lite.htm> was included in the OP in this
thread. On first run, it points out that there is also a shareware
version, but there is a checkbox to prevent that from ever being
displayed again.
FileAnt does not 'nag' you (at least not in the past 10 versons,
the next version may) and is shareware.

Thanks for clarifying. I notice you include the link to FileAnt in
posts not discussing file managers; are you affiliated with FileAnt in
some way?

None of the other things you mention are things I want in a file
manager, but exploring within archives is. On my system, xplorer²
explores within zip archives fine, and I can access the files within.
It won't explore inside cab files, instead calling my default archive
utility when I click them. I don't have any other archives lying
around on my NTFS partitions. I spose these behaviors may depend on
OS; I'm using WinXP home.

all 0.0.0.xx versions were in debug mode
the executable was huge and very slow, and contained a lot of bugs
and less features

(to the other poster)
you don't need dependency walker to run version 1.0 (actually
dep walker was never a requirement, even in debug mode)

(and to yet another poster)
i can't tell for sure what you found is x2's fault. Which program
did you use to detect the bad memory write errors? (I guess i should
do a purify one of these days). It could be down to your shell &
namespace extensions... but then again not. Does it happen everytime?

As I said this is the statement I had a problem with...
Spoon2001 said Xplorer2 was the best file manager
not
Xplorer2 lite was best freeware file manager.

I would agree with the second one and I think Xplorer2 is one of the best
light weight file managers.

I also find it interesting that on this news group not many people seem to
mind or understand the consequences of software which randomly overwrites
memory on your pc (many programs will do things like that). XP shields you
to a certain extent but it is not bullet proof. Dependency Walker is
freeware and it makes it easy to just test the software you install.
Thanks for clarifying. I notice you include the link to FileAnt in

I write FileAnt and I make no secret of that. I also download freeware and
have an interest in a few other newsgroups. I put http://www.fileant.com in
each thread so that I can track posts in google and reply to people.
http://groups.google.com/groups?num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&scoring=d&q=fileant.com

Do not get me wrong if I wanted to be covert I could post as someone else (a
lot of people do this but I do not). If I wanted to be nasty I would not
have posted this as a bug in Xplorer2, because only about 10 people will
read this (if that). The Xplorer2 author will probably read it and fix the
bug. There is not that much $ support for file managers... Xplorer2 and
FileAnt donations would just pay the costs of keeping them on the web. There
is a paragraph here that explain my views...

No problem. I'd just again suggest pointing out that it's not freeware
(unless/until that changes) when you need to bring it up here.
Probably a good idea to point out that you are the author each time as

I didn't mean to imply that you might want to be nasty. Thanks for
