There can be many reasons why that is happening. It can be that you have an
old computer which is struggling to run XP. It can be you have spyware or
viruses on your machine. It can be physical problems such as the hard drive
in trouble.
You can get BootVis for XP and run it to make startup faster but you can
also check the drive for errors, defragment etc to help.
You can also go to
www.grc.com and download "Wizmo" which can be used to do
a forced shutdown easily. It's a rather rude way to shut down but if you
have no other option after trying other stuff, that will help.
