Hello,

I have a little problem accessing an USB memory stick (any brand) under
XP embedded.

When I plug in the USB stick, it shows up in Explorer as "Removable
Disk" with a drive letter assigned, but when I try to access the disk I
get (apparently randomly) one of the error messages "Disk not
formatted" or "Please insert a disk in drive E:".

USB and FAT filesystem support are included in the image:

USB 2.0
USB Storage
USB Mass Storage Device
USB Root Hub
Removable Storage Service
Disk Management Basic / Dynamic Volume Runtime
FAT
FAT Format

Random errors may indicate hardware problems.
Some things you could try:

a) Try a different (hopefully a known good) USB stick
'Any brand' indicates you may have already tried this).
b) Replace USB adapater card if applicable
c) Replace or bypass any cables in between the USB socket and the
motherboard or usb card.
d) Review motherboard bios for overclocking or incorrect USB enabling
options.
e) Replace motherboard if applicable.
f) Reformat system and install XP Pro. If problems continue with XP
Pro then
problem is definitely hardware. Otherwise, return to looking at your
configuration.

While XP Pro is running it may be useful to export these registry
keys for comparison
with what you see in the XP Embedded image:

[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB]
and ..\usbechi, ..\usbhub, ..\usbohci.

You may want to also look at component "USB User Interface", which I
think brings in the little 'safely eject" icon in the system tray.

Hello,

thanks for your help. The USB subsystem appears to be ok, because a
card containing 4 USB -> Serial converters (FTDI) and a digital I/O
chip is connected to the same USB root hub and running fine.

A vanilla XP Pro installation also has no problems with the very same
USB devices, in fact we used USB memory sticks to transfer executables
and data to the prototype machine running XP Pro.

Therefore I can only assume that I'm missing some essential component.
I will try your suggestion and add the USB user interface component,
perhaps this will give me a clue as to which dependency I might have
missed.

The only USB booting that I have been successful with on my motherboard
is a FAT boot to dos.
I have been unable to get XPE to boot yet, even with FP2007.

The motherboard is an Advantech 6870 with intel 815E chipset.
