XP3 is still in "automatic updates"

OK, so I procrastinated the install of sp3. Coincidentally I read about the
deadline of patches and things on July 13,2010.
So I read a post or two about where one can read and go update on the web
xp3. I glanced at a few of the support pages, when I remembered that Its
probably already download and have had it 'sitting' ready to install for a
while; in my automatic updates. I am relieved due to the size of this
update.

So, can I assume that Windows did download this and all I have to do is
click install and no further action or investigating on my part is
necessary? Can you please let me know if there is something I need to be
aware of before I install this?

If you have an HP PC with an AMD processor, post back. Otherwise, read
on:

Assuming the file has been downloaded and is ready to install,
physically disconnect from the Internet.

I would recommend configuring a Clean Boot:

Then you can install SP3. Reboot twice. Undo the Clean Boot. Reconnect
to the Internet. Boot up.

Note that it is usually recommended to downgrade to IE6 before upgrading
to SP3. You don't *have* to do it, but it could save you some headaches
down the road. Once SP3 is loaded, then you should upgrade to either IE7
or IE8.

I have a pavilion HP dv8000 laptop (AMD Turion64)-
PLease advice. Also, Should I defrag, clean up the disk, do spywarwe/virus
scans , downgrade to IE6etc.... prior to the sp3 install??

Yes, SP3 is still being offered via Automatic Updates.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support for WinXP SP3 was
available from 14 April 2008 thru May 2009. Such support will cost you
US$59 or higher per incident now. [You snooze, you lose.]

Note: Support for WinXP SP2 ends on 13 July 2010. After that date, computers
running WinXP SP2 "will no longer receive software updates from Windows
Update" until SP3 is installed.

You need to first run sp37394.exe:

Yes, clean your disk (that is, delete your temp files). Then scan for
viruses and other malware. Downgrading to IE6 is not absolutely
necessary but it might be worth the while.

After rebooting twice and using the PC for a few days, you may once more
delete your temp files. *Then* you may defrag if you wish.

It's not a bad idea to create an image of your hard drive before
installing SP3. That's what I would do.

Hi Daave,
I downladed the sp37394 and was following the steps. But it couldnot proceed
because it said, "your system does not meet the minimum requirements for
this update. Update has been canelled (9998)"

So I can not upgrade this important utility....
Anything else I can do?

When you did this, were you logged on with a computer administrator
account? (That would be necessary.)

It's possible that although you have an HP PC and you also have an AMD
processor, you do not have a factory-installed HP-OEM image on your hard
drive. It is only if *all three* situations co-exist that there would be
an issue installing SP3.

You could run Jesper's tool. It would confirm if you have an AMD
processor or not. And it would indicate whether or not the IntelPPM
driver is set to load. If all three situations co-exist, you need to
disable that driver.

Since you have XP Home, can you boot into Safe Mode and log on as
Administrator? (The default password is blank.)

Possible workaround: Boot into Safe Mode and rename INTELPMM.SYS to
INTELPMM.OLD.
