Problem is: when you shut down thats a 2 minute task. But, the REAL problem
is start up: This PC wont start UNLESS you:
1. disconnect from wall power, by turning power strip off.
2. press the on button on the DELL computer of about 10 years old but still
going strong (besides this issue)
3. after turning on this way she will go.

if i use the regular way of switching her on, nothing happens, it hangs up,
sometimes on a white screen, nothing shows on screen at all..
terribly weird.
ideas? send em! thanks!

This may help with your shutdown.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

UPHClean v1.6d readme.txt

For your slow boot.

Are any devices malfunctioning? Select Start, All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Information. Open Components under System Summary
and click on Problem Devices. Is anything listed there?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

One suggestion to keep from getting load of spam mail, is never post your
real e-mail address in these newsgroups, spammers harvest them and send you
garbage.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup Service once installed runs in the background.
It help help shutdown by closing running programmes properly and should
help speed up the shutdown process. Itis not, however, a cure all for all
shutdown problems. Try some shutdowns and see if they still take overlong.

What was the result of inspecting the Event Viewer logs?
