XP won't load from 98

When I go to load my XP after the first time it starts up,
a black screen comes up and just sits there. It does
nothing. I don't think that this screen is supposed to be
there. My pc was built by hand, so I can't even call
anyone for help.

Please help.

Go back to Windows 98. Once installed and at the 98 desktop, place the XP
CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System
Compatibility." The report it generates may give a clue as to why this is
happening.

For some reason none of anyoone's messages are working for
me, they are all unavailable to me. Can someone please
email me with a suggestion?

I contacted the person who built my pc, he will install
the software at a price...lovely.
