XP wiped/reinstalled-can't retrieve backup off CDs

Okay, I am a first timer, but I created my backup and wiped and reinstalled
XP. Now I can't get my PC to accept my backup. It knows it is a back up
file, but won't use it. WHY? What do I do?

If you can read the CD, what are the file extensions? ie: .exe, .txt
..dll .cab
