xp will not start

I'm trying to help a friend troubleshoot a problem she's
having with XP.

While shutting down, she received an "explorer has
encountered an error" message. She chose the "don't send
the report" option, but she got the same message
repeatedly. She shut down using the switch.

The machine will not start now, even in Safe Mode. We
tried the Last Known Good Configuration, but it just
hangs.

Next, we booted from the installation CD and went into
the Recovery Console. We tried the FIXMBR command, to no
avail.

Then we tried a reinstall. During the process, the
installation abruptly stops in the "Installing devices"
phase. There is a quick flash of a "blue screen", but it
disappears before we can read it. The installation then
restarts, but it continues in that cycle.

There have been no recent devices or software installed
or reconfigured. I'm @ my wit's end!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!

Hi

Try disconnecting all devices apart from the mouse, keyboard and monitorbefore another reinstall.
