xp will not recognize any printer drivers

I had 2 different printers and have tried for 4 days to get either of them to work. The install cd's are mia so I went to the canon web site and also the epson web site to download the recommended drivers. Tried to install them again and got this message >printer driver not installed operation could not be completed< Went out and bought a new Lexmark Z25 that was designed for XP and have had all the same problems. Downloaded drivers from microsoft and Lexmark and the hardware wizard shuts down saying the parameters are wrong then worked clicked finish and got this message >printer driver not installed operation could not be completed< is there anyone who knows how to solve this before I go nuts. I have a deadline coming up and have to have a printer asap.
