XP to XP Remote Desktop Printing - No Printers At All Being Redirected

A

Art Vandelay

I have a bit of a problem getting my XP Pro to XP Pro Remote Desktop
printing going.

I am trying to connect to my Work PC Running XPProSP2, from my Home PC, XP
Pro, SP2.

No Printer redirection is occurring. Not even a test HPLJ4 set up as LPT1 on
both PC's.

I have the exact same printers set up on a Server 2003 box, it works
seamlessly.

It's just like the client PC is not mapping anything at all, It's like it is
disabled or something.

I checked to GP on the PC and the domain, it shows NOT CONFIGURED.

Event Viewer, nothing, no 1111, 1112, 1113 errors.

The XP Firewall is disabled.

I am stumped.

Any ideas on troubleshooting this? Is there a way to enable a debugging log
to be generated or some other advanced stuff?

Thanks!

Art,

I had exactly the same problem as you; couldn't print when connected to an
XP box, could print when on a Win2k3 box. On XP, the TSxxx port was missing.

In my case it turns out that the XP had a group policy setting (set on the
domain and applied to the OU that the PC was in) which was preventing printer
redirection. I know youve already looked at group policy settings, but worth
looking again just in case. You may have more than one policy applied to the
OU that the PC is in. Take a look at computer configuration > administrative
templates > windows components > Terminal Services > Client/Server data
redirection. The policy that was breaking printing for me was "Do not allow
client printer redirection". It was set to "enabled"; I set it to "disabled"
although I could have it "Not configured" - but I wanted to be sure.

The reason I could print when connecting to a server was simply that the
server wasn't in the same OU, and this policy was overriding the default
domain policy.

Running gpupdate /force on the remote PC and then reconnecting got me my
printer (the remote PC already had the drivers).

hope this helps,

Aitor
