XP takes forever to load

Hi, I'm having the same probelms as Jay. It takes all
users a long time to boot up to their desktop. And for
my daughter's account, it will finally boot to her
desktop, but no icons, taskbar, etc. show up, only her
background. I searched for the "wupdate.exe" bug but did
not find it. I did a virus check and defraged, but to no
avail. Help!

You should list your system specs. Of course XP will run
slow on a slow PC and fast on a P4.

Does it help if you press escape one or more times when the system seems to
wait?

I have something similar. On BOOT ONLY, I get a 60-90 second delay when all
I see is the colored desktop background and the taskbar with nothing in the
QL or tray areas. It's like WinXP is taking a breather. Then after the
60-90 seconds, it takes off and everything opens and initializes. I don't
have this problem if I only logoff/on. There is no delay at all then. I've
tried running a bootlog, but don't see anything there that stands out. I am
also running a classic desktop without all the XP eyecandy BS. My system is
virus & trojan clean, defragged twice a week & "tuned". I've reviewed
everything in the startup folder and registry run keys but if it was
something there, then I should have the same effect at both bootup and
logoff/on.

One possible cause of that is having a LAN connection trying to access
the LAN (and specifically its DHCP server) when it is not there. The
time out is very long.
