XP system can see home home network and router but cannot get toInternet

I was stupidly editing my registry to remove keys relative to some old
communication software and I seem to have screwed up my network
connectivity.

I can plug in a LAN cable and do file sharing with this computer. The
computer also shows up in the router's DHCP clients listing. The LAN
connection properties says the system is connected.

However, when I open Internet Explorer or another browser, I can't get
to the Internet. IE falls back on the dial-up option or to "Working
Offline."

I've tried Windows System restore and messing with the TCP/IP settings
in the Connection propeties.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Have you tried running a System Restore to take the system back to a point
when things did work correctly?

Yes, I tried restoring to two earlier points, but it didn't help.

I didn't do any changes but I had a similar activity earlier today. After
checking all things called the server support dept. and he suggested unplug
the satelite modem. I did that and immediately the browser produced pages.
If you don't have a modem set-up then the router perhaps reboot the router?

The only other thing that I can think of that you can try is the link below.

Never but never play with the registry unless you know it inside and out and even then think again.

Thank you so much, Richard and Rose.

I rebooted the router and this fixed it! This is the second problem I
had where it appeared the computer was getting to the router fine, but
just rebooting the router fixed it.

Notes to self:

1) Always try rebooting the router for ANY connectivity problems.

2) Never mess with the Registry unless following specific instructions
from an engineer.

Thanks again!
