XP Home - Ghost network cards

Hello,

after installing my Windows XP home and the system was running alright, I
decided to update the drivers for my mainboard and the onboard LAN interface.
This worked and I rebooted my machine. After rebooting though the
TCP/IP-configuration for the LAN-adapter was gone and the LAN connection was
called LAN connection 2 now.
In spite of everything I just reconfigured the protocol again with the
IP-Address 192.168.0.7. Then I got the error message, that the address was
already in use by the same network card (LAN connection 1).
Thinking "Whatever" I just gave it the 192.168.0.8 and it seemed to be ok.
But now my internet connection would not work any longer. Pinging my router I
got no reply. From another machine I could ping it though,
and my internet connection is fine (also with the same cat. 5 cable!).
Connecting directly to the DSL modem also made it possible to establish an
internet connection. Checking the internet connection
you could see that sent and received bytes were at normal level and rate.
Looking at the same stats for my network card though it only was sending
packages but no receiving any. I suppose they end up at the ghost network
adapter #1.
There is no old network available in the device manager even if you view the
hidden devices. Uninstalling and reinstalling of the network adapter didn't
help either. Surprisingly it didn't help to change the sub net of my
network to 192.168.1.*. I still was not receiving packages!
How can I get my system back to working correctly? How can I get rid of LAN
connection 1?
Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Hi.

Uninstall the NICs Drivers.

Take out the NIC, Disable Onboard NIC (if you have one).

Reboot the computer one time with No Physical NIC adapter in.

Switch off put in the NIC (or enable the onboard one) install the drivers.

Make sure that there is No IRQ conflict.

Enjoy.

Jack (MVP-Networking).
