it's been about a week since i installed sp2 and now my
computer reboots without warning. I checked the event
log and it listed:
1) event 1001 -The computer has rebooted from a
bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007,
0x00000cd4, 0x024c0001, 0x828acc70). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini090804-01.dmp.

2)event 45 -The serial driver detected a hardware
failure on device \Device\Serial0 and will disable this
device.
Any suggestions of what is going on? thanks

Sounds like you have failing hardware. This is coincidental with any
software (service pack) installation. What do you have on the serial
port?

If your computer is fairly old, your motherboard may be failing. In any
case, here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps. Not
everything may apply to you:

1) open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing); 2) test
the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test run
for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately; 3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from
the mftr.; 4) the power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for
the devices you have in the system; 5) test the motherboard with
something like TuffTest from www.tufftest.com. Testing hardware
failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good
parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable
opening your computer, take the machine to a good local computer repair
shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy type of store).
