When my XP starts up, MSN Messenger comes up.
Where do I go to stop this and other non essential programs from starting
every time I start XP???

Open Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, click the Add/Remove Windows
Components button on the left, find Windows Messenger and de-select it.

Remove the option from both MSN Messenger's Preferences and Outlook
Express' Tools/Options.

Depends on the program ... what other programs are starting up with XP?

WHOA, I don't want to delete the programs.
Kelly answered the question - msconfig fixed it.

Yes, but configuring OE and MSN Messenger directly is a better way to do
it. If you do that, it will automatically be removed from MSCONFIG.
MSCONFIG should only be used if a program doesn't have an option to turn
off starting with Windows. Put it back in MSCONFIG and take it out of OE
and MSN Messenger and you'll see.

Also if you don't turn it off to start up when windows starts in the program
itself, the next time you open msn messenger, often times it will read that
selection in the options menu and will re-configure itself to start up when
windows starts. I've seen it re-select itself in the registry and have also
seen it add another registry entry, leaving the old entry that you had
unselected alone.

best of luck!

On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its
Options to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you
actually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon"
option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't
work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab,
uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically.

However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of
running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell
you, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs
you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but
others have no effect on performance.

Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do
is determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what
the cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can get
more information about these at
http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you can't find it there,
try google searches and ask about specifics here.

Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.

These annoying pop-ups on startup may drive you nuts! In fact, Windows
long needed some personalization so here's a fairly curious program
you might wanna take a look at. I find it useful, maybe some of you
would like as well - called Vista Start Menu, kind of lets fully
customize your Start Menu in ways that regular Windows Start Menu does
not allow. It's here: http://www.vistastartmenu.com

Cheers!
