Restarting by itself from standby mode

Have windows XP and since it usually takes a bit of time to start up,
sometimes I exit Outlook Express and then exit Firefox, close any other
programs then put it into *standby* mode, since it starts up again more
quickly from there.

Now sometimes for some reason the pc starts up again *by itself*. What might
be the reason for that please?

Check if Task Scheduler has an event scheduled that wakes the computer
to run.

Check in the BIOS if wake-on-LAN is enabled.

Do you have cats or any other pets that walk on your keyboard? Is there
anything, e.g., a virus scan regularly scheduled and marked to wake the
computer if necessary, do you live on a noisy street with big truck
traffic that rattles your desk and vibrates the mouse, have you ran your
anti virus and malware solutions lately to see if they can explain the
problem?

Basically there isn't anything necessarily wrong with your computer: it
might be an environmental issue. The bigger problem is when you move
your mouse, tap your keyboard, then push the power button and nothing
wakes the computer.

The device manager offers options (to administrative users) to inhibit
certain devices from being able to wake the computer. You should explore
those settings if you haven't already. By the way, Logitech and some
others have over road your capabilities to set certain device wake up
conditions: Logitech has a new multi device wireless receiver that if
you could turn it off for one device it would be off for all. Instead of
providing a controlled interface to deal with the problem, they just
turn wake up on even if you turn it off. Mother knows best.

In any event snoop around the device manager and the scheduler. Further,
if you have a cat you must entertain it anytime you are not on your
computer. If you don't have a cat, you should adopt one immediately or a
dog if you prefer.

In Device Manager, check your NIC setting.

Start : Run : devmgmt.msc

Do properties on the network interface, look in the Power Management tab,
and see if it is set to

"Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"

Mine is disabled right now, and the tick box is unticked. That
means my NIC is not "watching for Ethernet packets" when the
computer is not in a running state.

NICs vary as to what can wake them. Some are designed to
be awakened only by a "Magic Packet" (a packet with a very
well defined format). And for the most part, those aren't
a problem. Some though, have around four wake options, one
of which is "Carrier Sense". Virtually any activity on the
NIC cable (a burp or fart), will wake up the computer. You
don't want that setting. That setting serves no purpose.

An earthquake or some nearby demolition could have shakken your desk
enough to move the mouse.

Of course there's always the possibility of GHOSTS ! :)
