XP Start Up Problem

Repeat question: Get error message when booting up computer. Message says:
"Invalid boot.ini file". Sometimes I get the set up screen, sometimes not.
Sometimes the desktop loads just fine, sometimes it takes forever. Am
clueless. Can anyone help? This is a new thing out of seemingly nowhere.
